SAP is developing its strategy “to enable every organization to become a smart, sustainable business” and Applium has decided to implement the “sustainability” dimension of this strategy in its SAP service offering. We are convinced thatsustainability is no longer a vision, but a requirement at the heart of business processes.
Regulatory evolution
Sustainability is the next big transformation for our customers, and it’s already happening, particularly in the European Union but also in other parts of the world.
Regulators are becoming active in enforcing the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The latest legislative developments bear witness to this:
- Holistic steering and reporting: many companies have to meet the CSR reporting requirements of the most common standards, such as GRI, TCFD globally, CSRD and European Taxonomy in the EU. Since January 2023, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) has come into force and is harmonized with the European Taxonomy as part of the Green Pact for Europe.
- Climate action / Decarbonation: The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a new carbon regulation – a type of carbon pricing – designed to help the EU combat climate change. It emphasizes the need for companies in carbon-intensive industries to measure and report carbon emissions. The MACF will come into force in its transitional phase from October 1, 2023.
- Circular economy – Plastic tax regulations: The global economy is now only 7.2% circular, a percentage that has been falling in recent years. At the same time, we are witnessing the announcement of plastic tax regulations in many countries such as the UK and Spain. On May 29, 2023, at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, nearly 1,000 negotiators from 175 countries began the second session of work towards the adoption of a new international treaty on plastic pollution.
The need to adapt tools
More and more companies need to :
- transform their tools for the transition to digitization and hyper-automation of their processes (with the move to S/4HANA, for example)
- become more sustainable.
Much of the data needed to comply with and manage sustainability issues can be found in the solutions offered by SAP. Applium is committed to supporting and assisting in this transition.
